Wardrobe Melodies

Crawl inside Theatre Arlington's Narnia

By Megan Feldman

Ok, I'll admit it. When I was around 10, I ventured into the closet, my heart set on a magical transportation to Narnia, C.S. Lewis' fantasy world full of mystical creatures and an evil queen who serves Turkish delight in a sleigh. Imitating Lucy, Edmund, Peter and Susan, I nestled into my clothing and pretended to be inside the magical wardrobe. Then I screwed my eyes shut and focused, expecting to open them and see centaurs, the White Witch and glittering snow. No such luck. I was still surrounded by old dresses, my sister's hand-me-down sweaters and my new Converse sneakers. I didn't lose heart, though. In fact--oblivious to Lewis' Christian allusions--I read the entire series three times and tore through my favorite volume, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, more times than that. Too bad I never had the chance to act in Narnia the Musical at Theatre Arlington's Teen Musical Workshop. The production, through August 17 at Nolan Catholic High School, 4501 Bridge St. in Fort Worth, is 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $10; groups of 10 or more receive 20 percent off. For more information, call 817-261-9628 or visit theatrearlington.org.
